Microsoft has always had great interest in open source and open source software, from the development of free software to the acquisition of Cygwin. Microsoft has also played an important role in the development and adoption of open source technologies in our products. More recently, the Microsoft Virtual Machine team has become more involved in open source, contributing to both Ubuntu and Fedora. In addition, Microsoft is a strong supporter of the open source community, and the European Open Source Games Forum (EOSG) is also hosted in Microsoft facilities overlooking the River Thames at One Canada Square. The EOSG offers an Open Source Summit each year, with some keynotes, demos and presentations.
As part of our continued support for both Windows and Linux virtualization, Microsoft is committed to building open-source extensions and alternatives to the virtualization components of our virtualization products, such as Virtual Machine Monitor (VMKM). These VMKMs provide open source replacements for the KVM hypervisor and extensions to the user experience in the Virtual Machine Manager agents on Linux hosts and the Hyper-V host. We are also working hard to ensure that Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) is able to work well with other open source hypervisors such as Xen and the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) to provide a superb customer experience.
