John Chang moves to Hong Kong, to protect his soon to be fiancee Michelle Yeung, who is the only witness to a murder. Set 200 years ago in the Qing Dynasty, Jet Li's is the first film to come to China since the Cultural Revolution, where some had written the country off as a completely irrelevant economic force and Li has to convince his Jigsaw-like employers that with a few well selected titles they can return to the former glory days. Though his first two pics have been big successes around the world, The Bodyguard was to arguably be his most ambitious film, weighing in at over $150 million in production. Many pros and cons of the film, but we first spot his signature on and off screen style when he and Michelle make a submission with a gun in the shower: it's rapid-fire kung fu action which you would be forgiven for thinking the reaction of agents was something of the '"Is that all there is?". When you're allowed a greater budget, you can get even better shots, like the opening scene of the assassins crashing the car into Michelle and John: it's some intense stunt acrobatics that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout and the final sequence are some of the most intense unrestrained action that has been seen since some of the martial arts classics. One of my favourite things, the espionage page, set this film apart from the other Li's classic Martial Universe - it's a comic book almost and it's spectacular.
