When one version of an event comes out as reported, we call that primary source. Several different parties can be primary sources. In the Lunchroom Fight activity, recorded conversations between the students and the vice principal are primary sources, and their statements "I saw Julie use pink trash bags to pack her lunch" and "I saw Madison drag a trash bag onto the tables" qualify as primary sources. If the vice principal herself were interviewed, she could be a primary source of information. Although she didn't see what happened, she can tell us in her own words about her impressions and observations when she investigated the incident.

The primary sources need to be confronted with a number of different pieces of evidence. A number of students, for example, tell the vice principal that they saw Julie and Madison acting strangely leading up to the lunchroom fight. The vice principal interprets their behavior as an indication that they might be lying to her. She asks the students the following questions: to interpret the accusation "I saw Julie use pink trash bags to pack her lunch" does she believe the person who said it, and if so, why? And does she believe the accusation "I saw Madison drag a trash bag onto the tables" made by the students who saw it? And if so, why?
