SmartPeople2.0 is an assistive robot-based telepresence system for delivering exercise sessions to the elderly using a tablet display. The smartPeople2.0 consists of a robot operating in participants' homes and conducting the exercise sessions there, via visual and audio communication with participants through the tablet display. When users log out of the system, the robot will attempt to automatically send the exercise data to a server via a broadband Internet connection.
Methods: Eighteen participants (mean age = 73.9 years, age range = 61-85 years, 10 men and 8 women) from the community and assisted-living facilities were randomly assigned to IG (6 males, age range = 60-76 years, 2 women, age range = 63-79 years) and CG (5 males, age range = 61-76 years, 3 women, age range = 64-79 years).
Results: This study showed that SmartPeople2.0 assisted telepresence sessions successfully promoted LGADs in sedentary participants with IG (n=11) and CG members (n=9). Intelligent software and a robot, combined with telephone or tablet-based automated remote supervision, could be a potential solution for LGADs for the elderly.
Conclusions: Generally, LGADs (motor or cognitive difficulty) are seen in elderly patients with AD and delirium, especially after an acute event (e.g., surgery). Emerging therapies need to address LGADs to improve the quality of life of patients with cognitive decline.
Although the changes in cognitive function were not significantly different between the IG and CG participants, the IG participants showed a significant increase in MMSE scores during the intervention period (P=.04). 7211a4ac4a
