Scoping reviews have been used to evaluate the global status of a standard-of-care and the feasibility of these standards within different geographical regions. The work of a scoping review by McClure and colleagues18 on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV is an example of this methodology being used globally. The review investigated which diagnostic criteria were being used around the world in the diagnosis of STIs and HIV. The aim of the scoping review was to identify how these standards work when implemented, and to investigate if the standards had been implemented in different countries across the globe. The results of the review revealed that when diagnostic methods were implemented, they were often very different to those recommended in the guidelines. This study was one of the first to use scoping reviews to examine the standard-of-care of STIs across the world, revealing that diagnostic assessments and strategies to handle STIs vary significantly across the globe. This review led to the development of a set of STI guidelines for use in general practice [18].
Scoping reviews offer a quick and efficient way to proc‐ed physical activity data and to identify where further research is needed. Over the past 11 years, Sahota and colleagues28 have regularly conducted a scoping review on physical activity and health using this methodology. The aim of the review is to investigate how physical activity has been defined, quantified, measured and whether the measurements can be applied to different settings. This scoping review has identified that ‘scoping’ reviews are a valuable tool to understand the definitions, measurement and terminology of physical activity and its outcomes. Scoping reviews are a valuable tool to identify a gap in the literature, and to highlight factors that hamper or assist physical activity research. Over the past 11 years the authors have published a series of scoping reviews6-11 with the overarching aim to develop a definition and measurement framework for physical activity. The methodology and results of the scoping reviews have been published in numerous peer-reviewed articles including the Journal of Physical Activity & Nutrition, Cochrane Library, JOGN, European Journal of Physical Activity Research and the Australasian Journal of Physiotherapy. The result of these scoping reviews have helped shape the conclusions and recommendations of a number of systematic reviews reported in these journals [32]. d2c66b5586
